Here, at the TPL HQ, we would like you to take a moment to think about misinformation (false or misleading data shared unintentionally) and disinformation (deliberately deceptive information)

While we do not wish to condemn any social media platform - we use it to distribute and promote this newsletter - we would like to point out that the spreading of mis- and disinformation is a serious, dangerous (health) matter, as outlined in this editorial in The Lancet

We at the TPL are trying to pass on information that has been peer-reviewed (or is open for peer review) and hopefully not fabricated or manipulated. We do this by verifying the source up to a certain extent, within our possibilities

However, sometimes articles get published that do contain wrong information, despite there being a whole science and community that tries to prevent that. This is beyond the scope (and means) of this newsletter, we merely are passing on information

That does not mean that we don’t want to take responsibility for what is published in this newsletter. If you ever find an article that you think contains dis- or misinformation, please do not hesitate to notify us of this and we can make sure we send out a correction

Ultimately, it is our shared professional and scientific duty to prevent, point out and combat this threat. As per The Lancet: “Misinformation and disinformation can no longer be viewed simply as an academic nuisance, but rather they are a societal threat.”
